Inec Registration Deadline

According to eRise, today marks the end of the Inec registration deadline (Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide. INEC had already extended the inec registration period past June 30, 2022, by one month. Before the first deadline, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, asking for an extension of the exercise past June 30, 2022.

It should be noted that INEC had extended the inec registration deadline until June 30 to allow more Nigerians to register before the court rendered a ruling on SERAP's lawsuit. This was done in conformity with the interim injunction of the court awaiting the resolution of the substantive complaint.

The Federal High Court rejected the lawsuit brought by SERAP in its decision on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Festus Okoye, national commissioner and chairman of INEC's Information and Voter Education Committee, responded to the court's decision by saying that it affirmed INEC's right to choose the date it wants to suspend the Inec Registration as long as it doesn't happen more than 90 days before the date set for the general elections, as specified in section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022. The Inec registration was consequently extended to today, July 31, 2022. The extension will now be in effect for 31 days in total.

Okoye claimed that the inec registration period was extended by two hours, to 5:00 pm daily, and that Saturdays and Sundays were also included in order to allow more Nigerians to register.

Reports in the media, particularly in the weeks preceding today's deadline, indicate that a significant number of prospective voters have not yet registered. Numerous states of the federation had daily swarms of thousands of citizens who arrived at registration locations as early as 6 am in an effort to beat the Inec registration (CVR) deadline.
