NANS set to introduce ID cards for Nigerian students

Plans are already on the way for NANS to introduce a uniform identity card for all students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

According to NANS president, Comrade Tijani Usman Shehu, the scheme will kick off early next month and it will go live on the students body’s website tomorrow, June 16.

Shehu said the ID card will be created by a system that will issue a unique identification number using a complex algorithm similar to the recommended travel documents by the United Nations and the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

He further noted that the scheme became necessary to identify bonafide students in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, adding that the schools identification cards can be forged because they are of low quality.

He also said the project has the backing of relevant stakeholders in the education sector like the National Univerities Commission, Vice Chancellors, security agencies and corporate organisations.

The decision to embark on the project was adopted by NANS Senate during its last meeting in Jos, Plateau state.

Reacting to the news, a 400 level Biochemistry student of the Lagos State University, Rukayat Arowojobe, said the initiative by NANS is the right step in the right direction. She called on all students across the nation to support the idea.

On her part, Monalisa Gbagbeke, a 200 level Public Administration student of the University of Abuja, expressed doubt about the viability of the project.

According to her, such a move might just be a strategy for the leaders of NANS to line up their pockets and might not benefit students in the long run.

”We must apply caution and not accept whatever they throw at us, some of them are just there to make money off their fellow students,” she opined.
